How to Make an 80s Book Cover Template in Photoshop Posted: 24 Nov 2020 07:00 AM PST In this book cover template Photoshop tutorial, we'll create an 80s book cover design. You can use this book cover design template to explore a whole host of book cover ideas—whether you love a retro vibe or another aesthetic is your jam. Let's dig right in. What You'll NeedYou'll need the following resources in order to complete this project:
Keep in mind that you can also follow these steps with your own assets and your own aesthetic. Feel free to use any fonts or imagery of your choice. 1. How to Create Your Own Book Cover TemplateStep 1First, let's talk about how book covers work. Your book cover template is going to vary depending on several factors, such as:
This information can feel very overwhelming for a beginner. Luckily, your printer or printing service should be able to help you with these specifics. Many printers will even offer templates with guides to help you as you begin your design. Step 2Still, it's vital that you understand some of the basic terms used when printing a book cover. Here are some terms to note, so you can effectively ask questions and work with your chosen printer: Trim Size. The trim size of your book (and its cover) is the final dimensions after the excess has been trimmed. So, for example, a 6"x9" print would have a 6"x9" print size. Bleed. The bleed extends beyond the trim size. So, for example, your 6"x9" print might require a 0.125" bleed around all edges. Think of it like extra space to ensure a print that goes "full bleed"—or images that extend the full height and width of the printed area. Step 3Safe Area. This is typically smaller than your trim size. Typically, documents have a Margin, which we can use to leave space around the perimeter of our work. The safe area is the part of the page where it's safe to put essentials (like text) without risk of trim or visibility issues. Step 4Spine Size. The size of your book's spine will vary based on the length of the book and your printing options. A larger book will have a larger spine. Ask your printer or refer to a book spine calculator for reference. Step 5 |

Color Psychology: What Color Says About You Posted: 24 Nov 2020 05:55 AM PST There's a reason you see a smattering of women in red business suits in the crowd when you watch the State of the Union address on TV. Red is a power color, and these are powerful women! The colors you choose to wear and even brand yourself with say a lot about you—individually and as a business. I have very few business suits. My absolute favorite one is a gorgeous tangerine and hot pink brocade with a mandarin collar. It's hot. It stands out from the crowd. It is not conservative. Whenever I wear it, I get lots of compliments. It's sooooooo me! But I'm not trying to blend in with everyone else around me. That's not my M.O. I'm a freelance writer, editor, and entrepreneur. I like to have fun with color. I know what colors look good on me and I wear them as often as possible. Does that mean I have an abnormally large collection of bright green shirts? Yes, it does. I really enjoyed reading this article on Inc.com about being color conscious. Wearing bold, brash colors might not be a great idea for someone who makes a living managing other peoples' money. You don't want your financial adviser to look quirky and brash. You want someone who presents themselves in a polished, even conservative manner. That's why black, gray, and khaki are such popular, classic colors. But what if you were creating an ad marketing campaign from scratch, or designing a new website? What would you want your designer to look like? I'm guessing the word "boring" doesn't instantly come to mind. Which is why creative professionals need to be cognizant of color, whether it's what they wear on their bodies or what is used on their websites. Take a peek into your closet and at your website or marketing materials and notice what colors are most prevalent. Lets take a look at what those colors might say about you, according to the psychology of color: RedWant to get people excited and draw attention to yourself? Wear red. It's the color of energy and the symbol of life. It evokes strength, power, and creates a visual impact. There's a reason stop lights and stop signs the world over are in red—it grabs our attention. Because it is such a strong color, it can also represent aggression, so beware. PinkThere's a reason that the cells of some of the most dangerous criminals are painted pink—it's been shown to calm aggression. This color is considered tranquil, warm, and loving. Unlike red, pink soothes rather than stimulates. YellowYellow is the color of happiness, sunlight, laughter, and optimism. That's why my home office is painted a cheerful shade of yellow. The color also has the power to bring out creativity, but can be overpowering if too much is used. The right shade of yellow can lift your spirits and evoke friendliness. The wrong shade can make you squint. OrangeWant to evoke a party-like atmosphere? Use orange. This color is associated with fun times, warmth, and ambition. There is nothing calming about this color at all, so if you are looking for a bold statement (and you're sick of red) think orange. It's easy to see and hard to miss—that's why hunters are so fond of the blaze orange hue. PurplePurple is the color of royalty and is associated with wealth, prosperity, wisdom, and sophistication. Looking to convey the finest quality? Try using purple. This hue can evoke contemplation or meditation, as well as spiritual awareness. But avoid using too much of it. BlueOverall, blue is a calming, restful color, though some shades can evoke a sense of coldness. People have been found to be more productive when working in a blue room because they are calm and focused. Blue is associated with intelligence, trust, efficiency, and serenity. No wonder it's most peoples' favorite color! GreenThe color of money and nature—two very important things. Green is another calming color that is also associated with generosity and peace. Green is located at the center of the color spectrum and is considered the color of balance and restoration. BlackThis is the color of authority, power, sophistication, and strength. A somber color, it also conveys intelligence—that's probably why most graduation robes are black. Depending on where you live, black is associated with grieving. It's a serious color that can be overwhelming if you wear it head to toe—you don't want to look self-absorbed. Black is, literally, every color in one. It covers, conceals, and enshrouds. GrayWant to look completely neutral? Go with gray. A suppressive color, gray exudes a lack of confidence, lack of energy, and depression. Posted: 24 Nov 2020 05:49 AM PST In this article, I'll show you how to use PHP code in your HTML pages. It's aimed at PHP beginners who are trying to strengthen their grip on the world's most popular server-side scripting language. Again, PHP is a server-side scripting language. That means a PHP script is executed on the server, the output is built on the server, and the result is sent as HTML to the client browser for rendering. It's natural to mix PHP and HTML in a script, but as a beginner, it's tricky to know how to combine the PHP code with the HTML code. Learn PHP With a Free Online CourseIf you want to learn PHP, check out our free online course on PHP fundamentals! In this course, you'll learn the fundamentals of PHP programming. You'll start with the basics, learning how PHP works and writing simple PHP loops and functions. Then you'll build up to coding classes for simple object-oriented programming (OOP). Along the way, you'll learn all the most important skills for writing apps for the web: you'll get a chance to practice responding to GET and POST requests, parsing JSON, authenticating users, and using a MySQL database.
Today, we're going to discuss a couple of different ways you could choose from when you want to use PHP in HTML. I assume that you have a working installation of PHP so that you can run the examples provided in this article. Different Ways to Combine PHP and HTMLBroadly speaking, when it comes to using PHP in HTML, there are two different approaches. The first is to embed the PHP code in your HTML file itself with the .html extension—this requires a special consideration which we'll discuss in a moment. The other option, the preferred way, is to combine PHP and HTML tags in .php files. Since PHP is a server-side scripting language, the code is interpreted and run on the server side. For example, if you add the following code in your index.html file, it won't run out of the box. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>Embed PHP in a .html File</title> </head> <body> <h1><?php echo "Hello World" ?></h1> </body> </html> First of all, don't worry if you haven't seen this kind of mixed PHP and HTML code before, as we'll discuss it in detail throughout this article. The above example outputs following in your browser: <?php echo "Hello World" ?> So as you can see, by default, PHP tags in your .html document are not detected, and they're just considered plain-text, outputting without parsing. That's because the server is usually configured to run PHP only for files with the .php extension. If you want to run your HTML files as PHP, you can tell the server to run your .html files as PHP files, but it's a much better idea to put your mixed PHP and HTML code into a file with the .php extension. That's what I'll show you in this tutorial. How to Add PHP Tags in Your HTML PageWhen it comes to integrating PHP code with HTML content, you need to enclose the PHP code with the PHP start tag Let's have a look at a very simple example which displays a message using PHP code. Create the index.php file with the following contents under your document root. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML - Simple Example</title> </head> <body> <h1><?php echo "This message is from server side." ?></h1> </body> </html> The important thing in the above example is that the PHP code is wrapped by the PHP tags. The output of the above example looks like this: And, if you look at the page source, it should look like this: As you can see, the PHP code is parsed and executed on the server side, and it's merged with HTML before the page is sent to the client browser. Let's have a look at another example: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML- Date Example</title> </head> <body> <div>This is pure HTML message.</div> <div>Next, we'll display today's date and day by PHP!</div> <div> Today's date is <b><?php echo date('Y/m/d') ?></b> and it's a <b><?php echo date('l') ?></b> today! </div> <div>Again, this is static HTML content.</div> </body> </html> This will output the current date and time, so you can use PHP code between the HTML tags to produce dynamic output from the server. It's important to remember that whenever the page is executed on the server side, all the code between the In fact, there's another way you could write the above example, as shown in the following snippet. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML- Date Example</title> </head> <body> <div>This is pure HTML message.</div> <div>Next, we'll display today's date and day by PHP!</div> <div> <?php echo 'Today's date is <b>' . date('Y/m/d') . '</b> and it's a <b>'.date('l').'</b> today!'; ?> </div> <div>Again, this is static HTML content.</div> </body> </html> In the above example, we've used the concatenation feature of PHP, which allows you to join different strings into one string. And finally, we've used the The output is the same irrespective of the method you use, as shown in the following screenshot. And that brings another question: which is the best way? Should you use the concatenation feature or insert separate PHP tags between the HTML tags? I would say it really depends—there's no strict rule that forces you to use one of these methods. Personally, I feel that the placeholder method is more readable compared to the concatenation method. The overall structure of the PHP page combined with HTML and PHP code should look like this: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>...</title> </head> <body> HTML... <?php PHP code ... ?> HTML... <?php PHP code ... ?> HTML... </body> </html> In the next section, we'll see how you could use PHP loops with HTML. How to Use PHP Loops in Your HTML PageIterating through the arrays to produce HTML content is one of the most common tasks you'll encounter while writing PHP scripts. In this section, we'll see how you could iterate through an array of items and generate output. In most cases, you'll need to display array content which you've populated from the database or some other sources. In this example, for the sake of simplicity, we'll initialize the array with different values at the beginning of the script itself. Go ahead and create a PHP file with the following contents. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML - foreach Example</title> </head> <body> <?php $employees = array('John', 'Michelle', 'Mari', 'Luke', 'Nellie'); ?> <h1>List of Employees</h1> <ul> <?php foreach ($employees as $employee) { ?> <li><?php echo $employee ?></li> <?php } ?> </ul> </body> </html> Firstly, we've initialized the array at the beginning of our script. Next, we've used the And the output should look like this: The same example with a <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML - foreach Example</title> </head> <body> <?php $employees = array('John', 'Michelle', 'Mari', 'Luke', 'Nellie'); $total = count($employees); ?> <h1>List of Employees</h1> <ul> <?php $i = 0; ?> <?php while ($i < $total) { ?> <li><?php echo $employees[$i] ?></li> <?php ++$i ?> <?php } ?> </ul> </body> </html> And the output will be the same. So that's how you can use In the next section, we'll see how you could use PHP short tags syntax. How to Use PHP Short TagsIn the examples we've discussed so far, we've used the Let's revise the example with the short-hand syntax which we discussed earlier. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML - Simple Example</title> </head> <body> <h1><?= "This message is from server side." ?></h1> </body> </html> As you can see, we can omit the So these are different ways you can use to add PHP in HTML content. As a beginner, you can learn from trying different ways to do things, and it's fun too! Including Code from Different FilesThere are a lot of situations where you need to use the same code on multiple pages of a website. One such example would be the header and footer section of a website. These sections usually contain the same HTML throughout the website. Think of this like moving the common CSS rules of a website into a stylesheet instead of placing them inside the There are four functions available in PHP to help you include other files within a PHP file. These are The function When working on big projects, it is possible that you might unintentionally include the same file multiple times. This could cause problems like function redifinition. One way to avoid these issues is to use the Lets use code from a previous section to show you how to use these functions. I will be using <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>How to put PHP in HTML</title> </head> <body> <div>This is pure HTML message.</div> <div>Next, we'll display today's date and day using PHP!</div> Create another file called date.php and place the following code in it. <?php include('header.php'); ?> <div> <?php echo 'Today's date is <b>' . date('Y/m/d') . We also have slideshow ideas for fun to help you create a fun presentation of your own. These are focused on content. Here are five slideshow ideas for fun that are sure to spice up your presentation: 1. Skip the TextThe traditional model for presentations is to load up slides with all your speaking points and text. It's almost as if someone said: the more text you include, the more informative your presentation will be! Creating a fun Google Slides presentation is about breaking out of traditions. In your next presentation, consider excluding all text. That's a different way of approaching a presentation, and it shows your audience that you embrace new ideas. 2. Use Bold Color SchemesMany of the fun slide templates you saw in this presentation use bold color schemes. It's a fun way to add an eye-catching slide to your deck. Too many presentations use traditional, monochrome color schemes. Those are fine for corporate and traditional purposes, but they aren't the only option. Flashy color schemes show that you're not a presenter that wants to stick to the norm. 3. Include a Fun VideoHere's another slideshow idea for fun: use the incredibly deep YouTube library to bring some fun to your presentation. Who among us hasn't spent hours lost in the rabbit hole of YouTube videos? Both Slides and YouTube are Google properties, so it's no surprise that they work well together. Learn to add a YouTube video to Slides with the help of our article below: 4. Include the AudienceIt's time to rethink the classic presentation format. It's traditionally been thought of as a presenter speaking directly to the audience. One of our favorite slideshow ideas for fun is to involve the audience in a presentation. What if we flipped the format? Here are several ways you can do that in your next presentation:
5. Open With a Joke (and an Animated Punchline)Here's another of our best fun slideshow ideas: start with a joke! Make sure that it's appropriate for the room and relevant to your presentation. That sets the tone that you're going to deliver a fun slideshow. Make sure to use a Google Slides animation to introduce the punchline. How to Change Your WordPress Theme Posted: 24 Nov 2020 01:33 AM PST In this tutorial we're going to walk through everything you need to know about how to change a theme on WordPress. Changing a WordPress ThemeBefore you can change themes the first thing you'll need to do is install the theme you want to use on your site. If you're not sure how to do this you can learn the process from our tutorial How to Install a WordPress Theme. After installing the theme you want to use, go to your WordPress admin area, then to Appearance > Themes via the menu in the left sidebar. Once there, hover over the thumbnail of theme of your choice, then click the Activate button. The thumbnail for the active theme will be moved to the first position in line. It will also display a label across the bottom reading "Active" to help you keep track of which theme you are currently using. When you visit your site's front end you should now see it looks different, with the new theme applied. In most cases your existing content should be unchanged, but there can sometimes be a couple of "gotchas" to watch out for in this regard. How to Change WordPress Theme Without Losing ContentThe underlying principle of a WordPress theme is that it separates your content from the appearance of your site, allowing you to change that appearance any time without losing content. However, sometimes a theme developer may elect to integrate bonus content creation functionality directly into the theme. This can be done instead of using the more "correct" but less convenient method of having you also install an accompanying plugin. Convenient though it may be, it once again ties content and appearance together, meaning you have to be on the lookout and know how to change WordPress themes without losing content. Shortcodes, Custom Fields, ScriptsFor example, a theme might integrate custom shortcodes, custom fields, or scripts that generate display elements such as image galleries. If you have used theme bonus features like these to add content to your site, the content may disappear or malfunction if you change themes. In the case of built in shortcodes, they will stop being processed and instead appear as plain text in your posts. In the image above, on the left the theme is active and using a shortcode to create a dropcap style. On the right the theme has changed and we now see the shortcode as plain text, which is of course not ideal. Theme OptionsAnother means through which you may end up with theme dependent content is the use of theme options. For example, you may utilize such options to upload a custom logo or set custom text in the footer. These types of content additions might be made through the official WordPress theme customization page: Or through a custom options page built into the theme: What to DoBecause every theme is different there is no way to give absolute advice on whether or not content loss could happen when you switch away from the theme you're currently using. For that reason there are two things you should check before you change themes:
Some types of theme dependent content, such as a logo image or footer text, should be easy to manually make copies of in order to later restore them to your site through the new theme. ln other cases you might find you're not sure how to carry over content, such as shortcode or custom field based content. If so you might need to request some guidance from the developer on how to proceed. In a worst-case scenario you could find you are really stuck and can't change themes without losing content. If so, your best bet might be to hire a developer to create a child theme for you, so you can keep all your theme dependant content but still change the look of your site. If you would like to learn what a child theme is, check out our article What Is a WordPress Child Theme? How to Change a WordPress Theme on a Live SiteBecause things can go wrong when changing themes on a site that already has content, such as losing theme dependent content as described above, it's generally not a good idea to blindly change a WordPress theme on a live site. There are two practices you can use to make sure such a theme change goes smoothly. Use Live PreviewBefore activating a theme, hover over its thumbnail and click the Live Preview button: This will give you a fully browsable live preview of how your site will look with the theme active, and you can check it thoroughly for issues before switching. Use a Staging SiteIdeally, you should have a "staging" site. A staging site is a private, exact duplicate of your site on which you can freely test anything you wish without fear of damaging your live, aka "production", site. Once you've changed themes on your staging site then thoroughly checked over everything and solved any problems that may have arisen, you can safely push your changes to your live site knowing your visitors will continue to have a smooth experience. The easiest way to setup a staging site is just to use a WordPress hosting service that can handle the process for you automatically, such as SiteGround for example. And That's How to Change a Theme on WordPressThe actual process of changing a WordPress theme is a simple point and click, but if your theme is inextricably tied into your content you may have some additional tasks to attend to in order to make the change seamless. To help you avoid them, here are a few key characteristics every logo should have. Take a look and make sure your landscaping logo designs incorporate them. 1.
