What is the best brush for painting clouds? The one that you create yourself, of course! In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a cloud brush in Photoshop using a photo, and how to create your own cloud brush set.

How to Make a Cloud Brush in Photoshop

Step 1

First, you need to find a photo of a cloud. If you want to create brushes with separate clouds, the cloud in the photo should be separated from the others.

Step 2

Use the Crop Tool (C) to quickly remove the rest of the image.

Step 3

Photoshop brushes are saved in grayscale, so we need to get rid of the colors and focus on the contrast instead. To do this, add a Black & White adjustment layer.

Step 4

By default, the sky will turn gray. This isn't enough for us! Drag the Blues and Cyans sliders to the left to make these colors darker, until the sky is completely black. Be careful not to make the cloud too dark in the process!

Step 5

We removed the sky from our brush, but the cloud looks pretty gray at the moment. To fix this, add a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

Step 6

Drag the Brightness slider to the right. Leave a couple of gray areas in the cloud, but make most of it pure white.

Step 7

Right-click the layer stack and select Flatten Image. Then press Control-I to invert the colors.

Step 8

Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Give it a name and press OK.

Step 9

The brush is ready to use! Just open the image with the clear sky, set the color to white, adjust the size with the [ and ] keys, and click to add the cloud.

Step 10

If you want to adjust the behavior of this brush, press F5 to open the Brush Settings panel. If you want to paint multiple clouds with one stroke, for example, you can adjust the settings in the following way:

... and the Opacity Jitter.

Step 13

To create a realistic effect of a cloudy sky, it's better to use a couple of brushes with different cloud shapes. You can create them using the same method. Sometimes, though, the clouds in your photo will not be so nicely separated from the other ones. In this case, just paint over the redundant areas using your individual cloud brush. This way, you'll remove them without compromising the edges of the cloud you're trying to select

Step 14

If you want to create your own cloud brush set, open the Brushes panel and click Create a New Group. Give it a name.

Step 15

Then simply drag your cloud brushes into the group.

We'll use this Adobe InDesign business project proposal in this demonstration. Feel free to download it and work along with these steps. You can also use a different InDesign project proposal template of your choice. These concepts will transfer.

Let's get started:

1. Open Your Pages Panel

When working in a multi-page InDesign document, it's really important to use your Pages panel. This is the place where you can easily navigate through our pages.

To open up the Pages panel go to Window > Pages. A preview of the panel is shown in the screenshot below.

Note that we can also move, duplicate, and delete pages from this panel. To do so just right click on a PC, or control click on Mac, on the layer in question. Then choose from the options.

2. Easily Edit Text With the Type Tool

To edit text, turn to the Type tool in your Tools panel. It's highlighted in the screenshot below.

With your Type tool active, click on any existing type in your layout. This will make it active. Then, type and edit as you would in most word processing software.

Want to add new text to your layout? That's easy too. This time select your Type tool and then click and drag to draw a new text box. Then type and edit as you'd do in the process above.

3. Change Font With the Character Panel

To change some of the visual characteristics of your type, turn to the Character panel. Open it by going to Window > Type & Tables > Character. Here's a preview of what this panel looks like in the screenshot below.

Start by selecting the type you'd like to change with the Selection tool.

Then, when the type is selected, make the changes you'd like in the Character panel. For example, you can change things like the font itself and the font size.

4. Change Text Alignment and Spacing With the Paragraph Panel

But what if you'd like to change things like line spacing or text alignment? For this, go to the Paragraph panel. You can find this under Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph.

Just like in the process above, use your Selection tool to select the type you'd like to change. If the type isn't selected any changes you make won't be applied.

Then use the Paragraph panel to do things like align your text to the left, right, center, or justify it. You can also do things like increase or decrease line spacing in your body copy.

5. Import Imagery Into Your Design Template

Let's also take a look at adding your own, custom imagery to your business proposal template.

Start by selecting one of the image placeholders with the Selection tool.

Then, go to File > Place.

Navigate to the image file on your computer and click OK. Then, InDesign will insert the image into our document. Double click on the image to toggle between resizing the rectangular frame holding the image and the image itself.

What You'll Need

To recreate the design above, you will need the following resources:

1. How to Start Creating an Action

Step 1

First, open the photo that you want to work with. Pick one which has a lot of contrast which will help create the vaporwave cyberpunk style. To open your photo, go to File > Open, choose your photo, and click Open. Now, before we get started, just check a couple of things:

Your photo should be in RGB Color mode, 8 Bits/Channel. To check this, go to Image > Mode.
For best results, your photo size should be 2000–4500 px wide/high. To check this, go to Image > Image Size.
Your photo should be the Background layer. If it is not, go to Layer > New > Background from Layer.

Step 2

Now go to Window > Actions, and in the Actions panel, click on the menu icon in the top right-hand corner, choose New Set to create a new set, and name it Cyberpunk. Then, click on the same menu icon again, choose New Action to create a new action, and name it Cyberpunk.

2. How to Create the Color Look

Step 1

In this section, we are going to create the color look. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map to create a new gradient map adjustment layer and name it Color_Look_1.

Now Double-click on this layer thumbnail, and then in the Properties panel, click on the gradient to open up the Gradient Editor panel and enter the settings below:

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Soft Light and set the Opacity to 70%.

3. How to Make the Final Adjustments

Step 1

In this section, we are going to make some final adjustments to the design. Select the Color_Look_1 layer and press D on your keyboard to reset the swatches. Then, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map to create a new gradient map adjustment layer and name it Overall Contrast.

Step 2

Now change the Blending Mode of this layer to Luminosity and set the Opacity to 80%.

Step 3

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Vibrance to create a new vibrance adjustment layer and name it Overall Vibrance/Saturation.

Step 4

Now Double-click on this layer thumbnail and, in the Properties panel, set the Vibrance to +25 and Saturation to +10.

Step 5

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels to create a new levels adjustment layer, and name it Overall Brightness.

Step 6

Now Double-click on this layer thumbnail and, in the Properties panel, enter the settings below:

Press Control-Alt-Shift-E on your keyboard to make a screenshot, and then press Control-Shift-U to desaturate this layer. Then, go to Filter > Other > High Pass and set the Radius to 2 px.

Step 8

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Hard Light and set the Opacity to 80%. Name this layer Overall Sharpening.
